In December 1941, America is reeling from the brutal attack on Pearl Harbor. Both patriotism and paranoia grip New York as the city frantically mobilizes for war. Nurse Louise Hunter is outraged when the FBI, in a midnight sweep of prominent Japanese residents, storms in to arrest her patient's wife. The desperately ill Professor Oakley is married to artist Masako Fumi. The nurse vows to help the professor free Masako. But when the murdered body of Masako's art dealer is discovered in the gallery where he'd been closing down her controversial show, Masako's troubles multiply. Homicide detective Michael McKenna doubts her guilt, but an ambitious government man schemes to lever the homicide and ensuing espionage accusations into a political cause célèbre.

Struggling to focus on one man's murder while America plunges into a worldwide war, Louise and McKenna defy both racism and ham-fisted government agents in order to expose the real killer.

I once taught high school history, and I wish I'd had more books like FACE OF THE ENEMY to use as enrichment resources. Many historical mysteries are either weighed down with detail or lacking in good plot elements needed for a truly puzzling story. FACE OF THE ENEMY has characters who matter to us, a skillfully woven plot, and tons of interesting details of the time that entertain but don't beat the reader over the head.
The background is the mania that infected Americans after Pearl Harbor, the assumption that anyone of Japanese (or German or Italian) background would automatically work against the U.S. in wartime. The authors never preach about such misguided conclusions; the events of the story show us what happened and let us judge for ourselves whether it was fair or not. Characters, too, are neither all good nor all bad but show up as human beings who might do wrong believing at the moment that it's right.
Reviews mentioned that this would be a good YA novel, and that's true, but it's not at all dumbed-down or childish. It's a good mystery and a good historical, which makes for a great story to this reader.

Interesting read with some good insight into the fear that developed around the presence of Japanese and German Americans during WWII. Character development is weak and the storyline sometimes drags.
The Face of the Enemy is an intelligent mystery set in the early days of US involvement in World War II, with something important to say about today, as all the best historical novels do.
What a great premise for a book--leading up to WW II in New York. Good character development and story line. I want to see more of these characters.
Very good read with a mystery that kept me guessing. Nicely drawn characters and well done historical aspects. Better than the cover would make me think.
A wonderful book, written with a true sense of what it must have been like during that tumultuous time. Each character was believable. The love between this courageous woman and her husband really struck home. The courage of the young nurse who helped to care for the husband has stuck with me.

Again, a wonderful read, especially for those interested in this interval in our national history. Joanne Dobson is a great author, in my opinion.
Read it for book club. New York history and atmosphere is a plus. Good mystery!
I just finished Face of the Enemy and found it intriguing and riveting. As an older person who was a child during WWII, it brought back many memories. It also gave me a deeper understanding of what happened in ordinary peoples' lives during those fearful days. Although I am not normally a fan of mysteries, I couldn't put this one down. It kept me guessing until the very end. I would highly recommend this book.
